Harry Osborn in Ultimate Spider-Man #16

I’m still struggling through life but not struggling through Ultimate Spider-Man, which continues to be very good!

Now, as we know, Harry was seemingly killed in Ultimate Spider-Man #14. Peter mourns him in the early pages of #15…

…but this is comic books! No-one stays dead!

So here we jump over to Ultimate Spider-Man #16 and see how Gwen is coping.

Not well, it seems. Gwen has a brief flashback to being comforted by her father after her mother’s death, and then to a date with Harry.

Gwen honey, your dad is a police captain… you are rich people…

This sweet conversation is interrupted by a phone call. “They found him,” Gwen says. We flash back to baby Gwen’s conversation with her father and it turns out that Captain Stacy…

…may not have been all he seemed!

Gwen is summoning to a secret meeting where she’s told “After years of trying, we’ve finally recovered your father’s remains.” AND THEN-

Yep, Gwen is Mysterio! A lot of folks saw that coming but it’s still a good twist!

In fact, Gwen is one of MANY Mysterios!

Flash forward to the Harry-Gwen wedding. Emily and Norman pop up here.

WOW, Norman. What a terrible father you continue to be. Why is Emily still with him? She must see how he treats their son.

And he clearly knows about the Mysterio thing!

Flash forward to Christmas. Ah, do you really know them indeed.

Flash forward again, to Gwen revealing to Quentin Beck Mysterio what she learned along with Harry some time ago: their reality is controlled by the Maker. Gwen begins working to “destroy the Empire” and we see her Mysterio-self filling us in on her true thoughts about past events.

Remember that time Jonah and Ben wondered if Gwen was the Goblin?

Jump forward to more recent times, Kraven’s taking of Harry and Peter. Quentin tracks the pair of them down for Gwen.

This also leads Gwen to discover Harry has her under a strict security protocol, headed by Otto. Otto’s worked out there’s something not quite right about Gwen, so Gwen has him fired.

And then, that leads us right up to the moment Harry got “shot”.

After the scene we saw in Ultimate Spider-Man #14 plays out, Gwen coldly shoots Kraven in the head. Needless to say, Harry is pretty weirded out by all this.

Gwen takes Harry to see his own grave. “So, I’m dead,” says Harry, “And the Green Goblin is not. Which must mean I’m not the Green Goblin.”

Okay, I started getting confused around that point. How is the Green Goblin not dead? Did I miss something? Because it’s not like there’s anyone else flying around in the costume or anything. Whaaat?

Harry takes “my wife was hiding a whole secret identity from me” pretty well, considering.

Harry and Gwen leave the graveyard, vowing to take the fight to the Maker. And that’s that! But next issue promises to be a very Harry-centric one. I wonder how Peter is going to react on finding out he’s alive?
