Harry Osborn in Ultimate Spider-Man #21-22

Now where were we? Gwen is targeting the other members of the Sinister Six, and in a pretty extreme way at that. An increasingly frazzled MJ doesn’t like this at all and gave Gwen a punch in the face for her efforts.

“I just don’t know how proactive I should be in trying to smooth things out between Gwen and -” Harry begins. Gwen and MJ? Or Gwen and him?

Otto with a spider? That can’t be good.

But there’s no time for that right now. Gwen and the other Mysterios are betrayed by James Wesley (under Mr Negative’s control) and the last we see of them in USM #21, a bomb is going off in their midst. Is this the end of Gwen? Surely not!

Also… Spider-Man himself gets a mere one panel in #21 and I understand some fans are getting kind of frustrated that Spider-Man isn’t showing up much in his own comic. Obviously things are working out pretty well for me as a Harry fan but it’s a complaint I totally understand.

Another complaint I totally understand is the time jumps between issues. Here we jump forward all the way to the December after the bombing, so we don’t see Harry grieving Gwen’s (apparent) death. And that’s very frustrating, I’m not gonna lie. It seems like we miss out on so many character moments.

Anyway let’s look at USM #22. Otto is Superior Spider-Man now but on the side of the good guys! (Although he doesn’t tip which instantly makes him a bad guy in my book.) He’s working with the Parkers while Ben and Jonah get ready to bring down Kingpin with a news broadcast.

Mole Man is there too! It’s one big weird family!

Meanwhile Peter and Harry are fighting some Bullseyes.

How is Harry doing since Gwen’s death? He’s throwing himself into superheroics.

Their friendship continues to be heartwarming despite everything.

BUT WAIT! What’s this?

Harry and the Norman AI are cooking something up! Can it be that Gwen, whose body we never saw, is not dead after all?

Harry is sure not very happy about the situation!

Awww. I do appreciate how this comic is a total dream for Peter/MJ lovers (of which I am also one.)

Meanwhile, Otto gives Richard a data-erasing “worm” device that needs to be placed in Kingpin’s territory. He recruits Black Cat to help him.

Ah, here’s Harry meeting a hooded figure on a rooftop. I WONDER WHO THAT COULD BE.

Oh, I was wrong. That’s not Gwen!

And Harry isn’t sure how to answer her question.

So what are y’all making of this story?

  1. I’m very confused and I think it’s due this series ends in two issues. If last Mysterio is not Gwen, then who is it? Kinda reminded me to Kindred for the spiky tentacles… Time skipes are not doing a favor I’m afraid.

    1. I think “us” and the arms imply its multiple people. Likely dead as the arms seem very “ghost like”, as well as the skull. The character being a mysterio implies this is a fusion of dead mysterios, including Gwen as implied by “Are you with me, Harry”, which sounds very personal. So most likely explanation = fusion of multiple dead mysterios, including Gwen
