Unpacking the twist at the end of Ultimate Spider-Man #14

It’s been an interesting month for Harry fans. We got to know a new variant of him in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and we got another issue of Ultimate Spider-Man where Harry has a big role to play.

BIG spoilers are ahead for USM#14! Don’t read further if you don’t want to be spoiled for one of the biggest shocks this series has pulled!

There are some great little Ultimate Harry moments in this comic before the twist. I didn’t know this, but turns out I really want to see Harry Osborn ride a dinosaur. Guess he managed to tame the ones from the end of last issue!

As Peter and Harry make their way across the Savage Land, hunted by Kraven, their friendship never falters.

Ah, there’s the “gotcha” (Harry’s famous catchphrase) showing up as it so often does in Harry stories.

At one point, Peter risks his life so Harry can get to safety. He’s such a good dude.

Luckily, Peter’s Spider-sense saves the day.

“I’m not leaving you behind,” Peter declares. Awww.

After an encounter with Mole Man, Harry and Peter lay a trap for Kraven. Here we see the difference in their approaches to superheroism: Peter wants to escape because he has a family to think of, while Harry wants to face the threat head-on.

Harry explains that he and Gwen have a protection program courtesy of Otto. If something happens to one of them, the other person will get security the likes of which they can barely comprehend. I think this is going to be VERY important later.

Eh I kind of feel like Harry should have done something to protect Peter’s family in the case of disaster, trust issues be damned. Or maybe that would have been overstepping the mark? What do you think?

Peter saves Harry’s life once more. Also wow, Kraven isn’t a very sporting hunter, is he?

Kraven is only wounded, not killed, by the trap Harry and Peter set. Peter starts beating Kraven, livid about his threats to his family. He’s ready to kill him, and Harry thinks he should-

I mean, you CAN finish him yourself, Harry. Just putting that out there.

Well… personally I agree with Harry here. Kraven is a direct threat to Peter’s family and is much too dangerous to be left alive. Yes it’s nice to have a rule against no killing but it just isn’t practical anymore. Sorry, Peter.

And Peter is about to learn this lesson in the worst possible way. As Harry shouts, “It’s him or it’s us!” Kraven shoots. He wounds Peter…

….and KILLS HARRY!

Noooo!

Peter really does try to beat Kraven to death this time, but is interrupted by the arrival of Mysterio, who warns him against it and tells him to run home to his family.

Peter flees home to MJ and tells her they have to take the kids and run.

So where do we go from here, Ultimate Harry fans? Well, I don’t think for one moment that Harry is really dead. Number one reason: It’s comics. Number two reason: Mysterio, the master of ILLUSION, is standing right there. And there’s a very popular fan theory that Mysterio is actually Gwen. Number three reason: This just might be the protection plan in action … which would also tie in with the Mysterio=Gwen theory.

Number four reason is the cover for Ultimate Spider-Man #17, coming this July!

Okay, I’ll admit that could signify a lot of things. The man reflected in the Goblin mask could even be Norman, as he looks quite a bit older. But it definitely heavily implies that Harry will be back, right?

Whether it will be quite the same Harry is more of a question…
