The Harry-related takeaways from Ultimate Spider-Man #4

Following on from issue #3!

Not a lot happens this issue in terms of supervillains, fights etc, but we get a long and interesting conversation between Harry, Peter, MJ and the newly introduced Gwen Stacy! Let’s take a look:

Harry and Gwen are happily married, with no kids

Gwen has kept her last name, as well – Harry introduces her as Gwen Stacy, not Gwen Osborn or Stacy-Osborn.

When asked why they don’t have kids (inappropriate, Peter), Harry answers “The world we’d be bringing them into.” His later dialogue indicates that that’s not just a line, he’s truly worried about the state of Earth-6160 and how the Maker’s Council are “playing god”. And he wants Peter, the person with actual superpowers, to help him save the world.

Which leads us to…

Harry gets to say the iconic line!

You all thought Uncle Ben was going to say it, didn’t you?

But Harry says it… and traditionally, those who say that line or a variation on it tend to have a considerably shortened lifespan afterwards. Oh no!

I’ve seen some people theorize that if Harry does die, Gwen might take his place as a more antagonistic Green Goblin. (Gwen Goblin?)

MJ isn’t really sold on Harry and Gwen

Her and Harry’s and Gwen’s friendship is one of my favourite things about the 616verse, but it’s a no-show here. Things might change when MJ learns about Peter’s secret identity, though…

Harry immediately told Gwen about his superhero activities

And he’s very surprised that Peter hasn’t told MJ. (I personally feel like he REALLY SHOULD have told her, especially since their young daughter knows).

That “I love my wife” line is a baaaad omen for Harry’s future in this comic. This issue has cemented it for me that he may not last much longer, despite the fact we’ve barely gotten to know him. He’s powerful, he wants to save the world, he’s got a great marriage… who better to use for the Big Death that makes Peter re-evaluate his role as Spider-Man? Nooooooo.

  1. Just this morning I read the issue and my mind blows 🤯 specially with the classic responsability line after being ruined in that madame web film 🫣 Indeed, but I have my doubts cuz according I know this series would be short and putting Harry death wouldn’t be such an impact considering there’s no such strong bond as in other earths. However, the next issue shows Harry walking beside uncle Ben and that makes me the feel our boy could turn into someone extreme and malicious who will force to Pete in his fight.
